The Indian Navy has signed a Project Sanction Order with Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited for the design and development of a 6MW medium-speed marine diesel engine. The project, categorized under Make-I, involves an investment of INR 2.7 billion, with the Indian government funding 70% of the cost.

The prototype engine will have an indigenous content of over 50%. Additionally, the order includes the detailed design development of diesel engines in the 3-10MW range. These engines are intended for use in main propulsion and power generation on Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard vessels.

Until now, higher-capacity marine diesel engines were primarily imported from foreign original equipment manufacturers. This project aims to establish domestic capability in marine engine manufacturing.

The agreement was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.
