Patel Engineering Works, in partnership with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), has completed a major refit of INS Kalpeni, a Car Nicobar-class Fast Attack Craft of the Indian Navy. The overhaul aimed to restore operational readiness and extend the vessel’s service life.

Key mechanical and systems upgrades included the replacement of two main engines, two fire pumps, two salvage pumps, two fuel oil transfer pumps, two fresh water pumps, one bilge pump, two air handling units, one anchor capstan with anchor and chain, and a single-arm boat davit. The ship’s rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) also underwent major rehabilitation.

Major overhauls were conducted on three reduction gearboxes, three diesel generators, three water jet propulsion units, two fuel oil centrifuges, and three high-pressure air compressors. Several kilometres of piping and hundreds of valves were replaced. The Machinery Control System was reconfigured and integrated with engine controls, diesel alternators, tank level indicators, flood alarms, HVAC systems, and fire mains to enhance onboard monitoring.

The upgrade scope also included enhancements to the main switchboard and diesel generator control panels, and HVAC improvements such as the overhaul of two air-conditioning compressors, robotic cleaning of ventilation trunks, and replacement of blower impellers.

Structural work included significant renewal of steel structures including the bulwark, repairs to the aluminium superstructure and bimetallic joints, and full-hull painting for corrosion protection. Crew accommodation areas were upgraded with CRCA furniture, stainless steel paneling in wet areas, and improvements to the galley. Fire-class insulation and non-watertight doors were replaced.

Additional refurbishments included updates to the captain’s cabin, officer wardroom, and sailors’ mess areas. Spring-loaded hatches were installed to improve watertight integrity, and new vertical and inclined ladders were added in compliance with naval safety standards.

Modernisation also included new LED lighting, overhauled CO₂ fire suppression systems, improved fire and flood detection systems, and upgrades to navigation and communication systems. Newly installed equipment comprised the Naval Tactical Communication System, satellite communication (SATCOM), a remote-controlled searchlight, and an electrical horn. All three shaft lines were realigned to enhance propulsion performance.
