VinFast has officially inaugurated its first electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant outside Vietnam, located at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), Tamil Nadu. Spanning 400 acres (160 hectares), the facility began operations on August 4, 2025, with an initial assembly capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, scalable to 150,000 units.

The plant was developed in just 15 months from groundbreaking to inauguration—the groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 25, 2024, and production of two electric SUV models, the VF 6 and VF 7, commenced with the opening on August 4, 2025. The greenfield project is expected to generate 3,000–3,500 direct jobs and thousands more indirectly across the supply chain.

Weldcom served as the general contractor for the plant’s automotive body shop, leveraging its prior experience from VinFast’s Hai Phong and Ha Tinh facilities in Vietnam. The company provided end-to-end solutions, including consulting, engineering design, installation, and commissioning, to meet stringent automation, efficiency, and precision standards required for EV manufacturing.

VinFast is actively negotiating with multiple component suppliers to strengthen its India-based supply chain. Discussions are underway with existing suppliers—some considering relocating production to Indian industrial parks—and a Vietnamese manufacturer is evaluating shifting its plastic production to India to support VinFast’s automotive projects.

As VinFast’s third operational plant globally (and fifth international project), this facility is part of the company’s USD 2 billion investment commitment to India, with USD 500 million allocated for the first five years. The plant has already secured orders from Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Mauritius, but the company’s immediate priority is to serve the Indian market.

Pham Sanh Chau, CEO of VinFast Asia, described the plant as a strategic foundation for long-term expansion, positioning India as the company’s export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The facility includes integrated workshops for body manufacturing, painting, assembly, quality control, and logistics, along with an auxiliary cluster to accommodate future local supplier growth.

VinFast is also preparing to showcase its EVs in Indian showrooms, although pricing and launch timelines have not yet been disclosed. The company is collaborating with RoadGrid, myTVS, Global Assure, and BatX Energies to expand its digital services, after-sales support, and battery reuse ecosystem.

The entry into India puts VinFast in direct competition with Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), MG Motor, Hyundai, Kia, Tesla, and BYD. VinFast aims to sell 200,000 vehicles globally in 2025, having delivered 72,100 units in the first half of the year—primarily in Vietnam—and is targeting 1 million units annually by 2030.

VinFast is a subsidiary of Vingroup JSC, a Vietnam-based conglomerate. The company manufactures electric SUVs, scooters, and buses, and continues to expand its global presence across North America, Europe, and Asia.
