Smith Structures (India) Pvt. Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu to set up a steel fabrication manufacturing facility in Tiruvallur district, involving an investment of INR 2 billion. The project is planned over the next five years and is expected to generate employment for more than 1,000 people.

The MoU was exchanged during the TN Rising Conclave held in Coimbatore. The agreement was formalised in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, along with Chintan Panchal, Managing Director of Smith Structures (India) Pvt. Ltd., and Anil Singh Baghel, Chief Executive Officer of the company.

The proposed facility will focus on sheet and structural steel fabrication. The company stated that the investment aligns with its expansion plans in southern India and is intended to support demand for fabricated steel structures across infrastructure, industrial, and commercial construction segments.

Smith Structures indicated that the Tiruvallur unit would add to its existing manufacturing footprint in the state. The company currently operates a fabrication facility in Chennai and plans to deploy automated manufacturing processes at the new site, including advanced cutting and welding systems, to support higher volumes and consistent output.

The project would be implemented in phases over a five-year period. Employment generation is expected to span manufacturing operations, engineering, quality control, and ancillary services linked to the facility.

The investment announcement comes amid continued efforts by Tamil Nadu to attract manufacturing projects in sectors such as engineering, automotive components, and capital goods. Tiruvallur district, located on the outskirts of Chennai, has emerged as a key industrial corridor due to its connectivity and proximity to ports and logistics infrastructure.

Smith Structures (India) Pvt. Ltd., incorporated in 2012, is engaged in the design, fabrication, and erection of pre-engineered and structural steel buildings. The company undertakes projects for industrial sheds, warehouses, and large-span steel structures, with manufacturing operations based in Chennai.
