Ola Electric Mobility Limited has received certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for its indigenously developed 5.2 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack based on 4680 Bharat Cell technology. The certification, granted under the AIS-156 Amendment 4 standards issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, makes Ola the first Indian electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to achieve approval for an in-house developed 4680-format cell battery pack.

According to a press release issued by Ola Electric on 28 October 2025, the certified battery pack will debut in the company’s S1 Pro+ electric scooter model, which will be the first Ola vehicle powered entirely by its proprietary cell technology. The company said deliveries of vehicles equipped with the new battery pack will commence shortly.

An Ola Electric spokesperson said the certification “marks a defining milestone in our mission to build India’s EV technology leadership and reduce reliance on global supply chains.” The spokesperson added that the new battery packs are designed to deliver improved range, performance, and reliability compared with earlier third-party cell-based systems.

Until now, Ola Electric has sourced cells from external suppliers for its scooter and motorcycle line-ups. The introduction of the 4680 Bharat Cell marks a major step towards vertical integration, enabling the company to manufacture critical components internally. The move is expected to improve unit economics and enhance production resilience as Ola’s upcoming cell manufacturing gigafactory scales up operations.

The certification process for the 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack involved a comprehensive testing regime assessing safety, electrical reliability, and performance under extreme conditions. Tests successfully completed include water immersion, vibration durability, and thermal shock resistance. Ola said the certification reinforces its commitment to product safety and durability.

Ola Electric, headquartered in Bengaluru, manufactures electric two-wheelers and components at its Futurefactory in Tamil Nadu. The company operates the Battery Innovation Centre (BIC) in Bengaluru, focusing on advanced cell chemistry and pack design. Its research and development network spans India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Ola maintains over 4,000 company-owned stores across India, forming one of the largest direct-to-customer EV retail networks in the country.
