A new supercapacitor manufacturing facility has been inaugurated at Keltron Component Complex Limited (KCCL) in Kallyassery, Kannur, Kerala. The plant, developed in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), represents an initial investment of ₹42 crore and is expected to contribute to India’s electronics, defence, and electric vehicle sectors.
The facility will produce up to 2,000 supercapacitors daily, which have a range of applications, including electric vehicles and space missions. Supercapacitors are valued for their ability to store and release energy faster than traditional batteries, offering advantages in sectors such as aerospace and automotive. The first phase of the facility, including the installation of imported machinery, has been completed. The plant aims to generate an annual turnover of ₹22 crore and a profit of ₹3 crore within four years.
At the inauguration event, the Kerala government highlighted its broader plans for the electronics sector, including an additional ₹1,000 crore investment to expand production capacity and modernize existing facilities. Keltron’s Karakulam unit is set to become part of the power electronics sector, and a master plan worth ₹395 crore is in place for Keltron’s modernization.
As part of the state’s electronics industry development, Kerala is also working on establishing an IT corridor connected to national highways and developing an electronics hardware manufacturing park at Amballur. Small manufacturing clusters, testing facilities, and laboratories are being set up to support the state’s growing electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
