ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has initiated a Rs 60,000-crore investment program to expand the production capacity of its steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat, from 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 15 MTPA. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held on January 19, 2025.
The expansion will involve upstream and downstream enhancements, including the addition of blast furnaces, sintering facilities, coke ovens, basic oxygen furnaces, and hot strip mills. AM/NS India stated that the project is expected to create over 60,000 jobs.
The company received environmental clearance for the project from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change after completing an environmental impact assessment. The expanded capacity will support domestic demand for high-grade steel, particularly in the automotive, defense, and infrastructure sectors, reducing reliance on imports.
AM/NS India also emphasized its focus on sustainability, stating it plans to integrate renewable energy into its operations and explore low-carbon technologies to contribute to decarbonization efforts in the steel industry.
The company, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, has indicated long-term plans to increase its total national steel production capacity to 30 MTPA over the next decade, in line with the government’s National Steel Policy, which aims to double domestic production capacity to 300 MTPA by 2030.
This expansion follows three years of operational improvements and investment in technology and research since AM/NS India was established in 2019.
