ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has commissioned a new Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) at its integrated steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat. The facility is part of the company’s ongoing INR 600 billion expansion project and is designed to produce Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) with strength levels up to 1180 megapascals (MPa) for automotive applications.

The unit is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imports for high-grade automotive steel and expanding AM/NS India’s value-added product portfolio. It will manufacture Galvanised (GI) and Galvannealed (GA) coated flat steels, including licensed products from ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. The plant is also expected to support upcoming regulatory standards such as India’s Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) Phase III norms, which come into effect from April 2027.

“The commissioning of the first-of-its-kind Continuous Galvanising Line marks another defining moment in our expansion project. With the constant support from our parent companies, we have set new benchmarks and further strengthened our ability to deliver world-class products, including the highest-strength steel ever produced in India to meet the evolving needs of the automotive sector,” said Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer of AM/NS India.

The CGL includes environmental technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions intensity. These features include waste heat recovery, advanced thermal energy control systems, regenerative electrical drives, and the use of electrolytic hydrogen. The initiative aligns with AM/NS India’s sustainability roadmap and its alignment with emerging frameworks such as the Green Steel Taxonomy.

As part of its broader expansion, AM/NS India aims to increase production capacity at the Hazira plant from 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 15 MTPA, with a long-term goal of reaching 24 MTPA. The expansion encompasses both upstream and downstream steelmaking infrastructure.

Beyond Hazira, the company is pursuing plans to establish a new integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh, where land acquisition is in progress. It also has plans for steel facilities in Odisha, where it currently maintains operational activities.

AM/NS India is also working toward decarbonising its operations by integrating renewable energy into production and adopting energy-efficient technologies in alignment with India’s climate commitments.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. The company operates as an integrated flat carbon steel producer with a crude steel capacity of 9 MTPA and downstream facilities across India. It also runs pellet plants with a combined capacity of 20 million tonnes.
