Tata Steel will decommission Coke Oven Battery #7 at its Jamshedpur plant on January 27, 2025, after 36 years of operation. The battery, commissioned in 1989, was the first stamp charge coke oven battery in India and has produced over 12 million tonnes of coke since its inception, according to a press release by the company.

The decommissioning process includes isolating the battery from the By-Product Plant’s foul gas suction network. As part of the procedure, raw gas from the ovens will be flared through oven top flares and ascension pipes. This controlled activity will begin at 9:00 a.m. (IST) on January 27 and is expected to continue for approximately 24 hours.

The company stated that the flaring is a planned safety measure in line with standard operating procedures and does not indicate an emergency. The advisory aims to inform the public about the activity and address any potential concerns regarding the visible flaring during the process.
