A parliamentary standing committee on railways has recommended increasing indigenous manufacturing of components for Shinkansen technology to support the long-term operations of India’s high-speed rail projects. The proposal aims to enhance local production capabilities as part of the Make in India initiative, according to a statement.
The committee also reviewed the financial performance of the national transporter, noting that net earnings have remained marginal over the past three years. Regarding the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project, it reported that the estimated cost stands at INR 1.08 trillion, with INR 711.16 billion spent as of January 2025. The project has reached 48.55% completion in terms of physical progress.
For future high-speed rail projects, the committee recommended conducting feasibility studies, exploring innovative financing models, and securing funding before approving new corridors. It also suggested that the railways ministry consider alternative methods to increase passenger revenue, including service-based earnings and enhanced on-board amenities.
