Alstom has been awarded a contract worth €144 million (approximately INR 1,285 crore) to supply traction components and electrical equipment for 17 Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, consisting of 408 cars. The contract also includes maintenance services for five years following the warranty period. The equipment will be supplied to Indian Railways’ Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
The traction systems will be installed in 24-car sleeper trainsets on the Vande Bharat platform, which are designed to operate at a maximum speed of 180 km/h, with a service speed of 160 km/h. The components will be manufactured at Alstom’s site in Maneja, India, with prototype deliveries expected to begin in August 2026. Serial production is scheduled to commence in 2027, followed by the start of the maintenance contract in 2029.
Alstom has an established presence in India, with engineering and manufacturing facilities in Bangalore, Savli, Coimbatore, and Maneja. The company is involved in multiple local and export projects, with the Maneja site alone handling more than 20 projects.
The contract aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernize rail transportation and enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities. The Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets are part of a broader initiative to upgrade India’s rail infrastructure with advanced technology and improved efficiency.
