BEML Limited has delivered an indigenously designed and manufactured electric rope shovel, the BRS21, to Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL). The shovel, weighing 720 tonnes and equipped with a 21 cubic metre bottom dump bucket, is intended for large-scale opencast mining operations.

The machine was officially handed over at Nigahi Mines in Singrauli in the presence of senior officials from BEML, Coal India Limited (CIL), and NCL. According to BEML, the BRS21 has been developed entirely in India and incorporates a Siemens IGBT-based AC drive system.

Designed as a zero-emission electric-driven solution, the BRS21 includes features such as 360-degree vision, fatigue monitoring, predictive maintenance systems, real-time diagnostics, and centralized lubrication. The operator cabin is described as ergonomically designed and spacious, with dust-free compartments and high-intensity LED lighting for night operations.

The equipment is projected to reduce approximately 189 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually per unit. The company stated that the machine was developed in 24 months.

BEML Limited is a public sector enterprise under India’s Ministry of Defence. The company manufactures a wide range of products including mining and construction equipment, rail and metro products, and defence systems.
