Applied Materials, Lam Research, and Bharat Semi Systems will invest a total of INR 230.94 billion in semiconductor projects in Karnataka. The projects were approved during a cabinet sub-committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The combined initiatives are expected to generate over 3,500 jobs in the state.
Lam Research will establish two facilities in the state. One is an advanced R&D laboratory with an investment of INR 67.90 billion, and the other is a semiconductor silicon component manufacturing unit valued at INR 91.11 billion. Together, the two projects are expected to create around 1,400 jobs and will focus on 2nm technology and silicon ingot production.
Lam Research President and CEO Tim Archer, along with India CVP and GM Rangesh Raghavan, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw last month. The meeting focused on the development of an integrated semiconductor ecosystem, covering areas such as chip design, fabrication, materials, equipment, skilled workforce, and international collaboration.
Applied Materials India plans to set up a research and development facility named the Innovation Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing (ICSM) in Bengaluru. The project will span 10 acres, involve an investment of INR 48.51 billion, and is expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs.
In late 2024, Karnataka Commerce and Industries Minister M. B. Patil and Commissioner Gunjan Krishna met with Dr. Satheesh Kuppurao, Group Vice President of Business Development & Growth and Country President of Applied Materials India, during a visit to the United States. The discussions focused on the planned R&D and innovation center in Karnataka and potential areas for collaboration.
Bharat Semi Systems will set up an integrated semiconductor design and manufacturing unit in Mysuru. The project, which includes both design and fabrication capabilities, will involve an investment of INR 23.42 billion and is projected to generate over 620 jobs. The facility will focus on compound semiconductors such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride, with applications in defence, telecom, and climate-resilient technologies.
“Together, these investments mark a decisive step toward making Karnataka a semiconductor powerhouse of the future,” said Priyank Kharge.
Applied Materials India is a subsidiary of Applied Materials Inc., a company engaged in materials engineering solutions used in the production of semiconductors and displays. Lam Research develops equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. Bharat Semi Systems is focused on semiconductor design and manufacturing, with an emphasis on compound semiconductor technologies.
