BEML Limited, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), and Umeandus Technologies India Private Limited (UTIPL) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop the Enhanced Freight Transport System (e-FTS), an automated, rail-based freight mobility solution aimed at improving cargo handling efficiency across Indian ports.

The MoU was exchanged during India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, in the presence of P.K. Roy, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, along with senior officials from all participating organisations.

Under the collaboration, BEML will design and supply driverless electric pods, also referred to as autonomous rolling stock, for the e-FTS. These pods will be capable of transporting both bulk and containerised cargo through dedicated, intelligent guideways.

The e-FTS concept integrates advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and smart control systems. It is intended to enhance operational speed, safety, and sustainability in port logistics while enabling real-time monitoring and reduced manual intervention.

The partnership among BEML, DPA, DMRC, and UTIPL aims to establish a modern, digitally connected, and energy-efficient freight transport network, supporting India’s ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and automation in its port operations.

BEML Limited is a Bengaluru-based public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence that manufactures rail and metro rolling stock, mining and construction equipment, and defence systems.
