ABB India Limited has received a domestic order from Titagarh Rail Systems Limited for the supply of integrated traction and control solutions for metro rolling stock to be deployed on Mumbai Metro Lines 5 and 6. The order will be executed over the next three to four years, adding a multi-year rail systems contract to ABB India’s order book.
The scope of supply covers 40 six-car trainsets, comprising 18 trainsets for Line 6 and 22 trainsets for Line 5. ABB’s delivery includes traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors, and train control and management system (TCMS) software, providing a complete, integrated traction and control solution for the metro trains.
In parallel with the order, Titagarh Rail Systems and ABB India have entered into an agreement covering propulsion systems and technology transfer for 25 kV alternating current metro applications, including driverless configurations. Under the agreement, ABB India will support design, manufacture, supply, testing, installation supervision, and commissioning of propulsion systems, along with the transfer of technology for TCMS for 25 kV metro systems, with automation grades from GoA2 upgradable to GoA4. The framework also provides for a gradual transfer of manufacturing and co-production of traction converters, auxiliary converters, and traction motors in India.
Commenting on the development, Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, said, “One of the strategies we are pursuing is to significantly integrate backwardly to keep our leadership in costs and delivery timelines. The development of the propulsion business and the joint venture with Ramakrishna Forging to manufacture wheelsets is an integral part of this strategy.”
The order is linked to Titagarh Rail Systems’ contract to supply 240 metro coaches for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This includes 132 cars for Line 5, running from Kapurbawadi to Kalyan APMC, and 108 cars for Line 6, connecting Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli (Eastern Express Highway). The contract scope also includes five years of maintenance following a two-year defect liability period.
