Wikov Group marked one year of operations at its assembly plant in Pune, India, a facility focused on the assembly of gearboxes for rail vehicles. The milestone was marked by a visit from Martin Wichterle, Owner of Wikov Group, and Michal Kurtinec, CEO of Wikov Gear, reflecting the company’s expansion in the Indian rail transportation sector.
The Pune facility has spent its first year establishing local capabilities, building partnerships, and developing projects related to gearbox systems for rail vehicles. The plant forms part of the company’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the Indian market and support future growth in rail mobility infrastructure.
The facility is designed to assemble gearboxes used in rail vehicles, enabling the company to operate closer to customers and respond more flexibly to regional project requirements. India represents a significant market for rail transportation, and the Pune site is positioned to combine Wikov’s engineering experience with local cooperation to deliver gearbox solutions suited to regional applications.
Wikov’s rail activities also draw on expertise from Gmeinder Getriebetechnik, its German subsidiary specialising in locomotive gearboxes. Through its global rail operations, the group has supplied gear units for several metro rail systems in India, including projects in Kochi, Mumbai, and Delhi.
Before establishing the Pune plant, the company also developed its presence in India through a cooperation agreement signed in 2019 with Premium Transmission, an Indian manufacturer of industrial gearboxes. The partnership enabled Wikov to access local manufacturing capabilities and distribution networks in sectors such as rail, mining, cement, and power.
The company also provides lifecycle support technologies for gearbox systems, including its WiGuard condition monitoring platform. The system monitors operational parameters such as vibration, temperature, oil condition, and torque, allowing operators to identify potential faults and schedule maintenance before failures occur.
Wikov Group is a Czech engineering company with nearly 140 years of history in the development and production of gears and gearboxes for industrial applications. The company employs more than 1,000 people globally and generates annual revenue of approximately CZK 4 billion, with operations across Europe, North America, and India.
