Bharat Innovative Glass Technologies (BIG Tech), a joint venture between Corning and Optiemus Infracom, is expected to begin manufacturing cover-glass parts for mobile consumer electronics in India by December 2025. The facility will produce finished cover-glass for smartphones, aiming to cater to domestic manufacturing demand.

Cover-glass is a protective layer placed over mobile displays before devices are shipped to market. Corning’s Gorilla Glass has been used in over eight billion devices by more than 45 brands, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Oppo, Google Pixel, and Huawei.

Optiemus Infracom has also launched RhinoTech, a line of made-in-India tempered glass screen protectors using glass engineered by Corning. “It is the first time in India that such advanced screen protection, developed with glass from Corning Incorporated, will be produced locally and made available for both domestic and international markets. We expect additional revenue of Rs 1,800-2,000 crore in financial year 2027 from RhinoTech business.” said Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman, Optiemus Infracom.

RhinoTech screen protectors will be produced at Optiemus’ Noida facility, where the glass will undergo chemical treatment before being sold in the Indian market from September 2025. “Compared to the existing screen protectors in the market, this is 5 times better on the scratch performance and survived up to 6 feet in the lab test,” said Sudhir Pillai, Managing Director of Corning India.

The domestic market for tempered glass screen protectors in India is estimated at 400 million pieces, with a retail value of INR 200 billion in 2025. Over 90 percent of demand is currently met through low-cost imports. In July 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards introduced the first Indian standard for chemically tempered glass screen protectors to address quality concerns and reduce reliance on such imports.

Corning is a US-based materials science company specialising in glass, ceramics, and optical physics. Optiemus Infracom is an Indian electronics manufacturer engaged in the design, assembly, and distribution of mobile devices and accessories.
