The Centre of Excellence in Maritime and Shipbuilding (CEMS) has opened an extension centre at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) in Kolkata as part of GRSE’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The facility, located at GRSE’s Technical Training Centre in Taratala, will conduct a specialised skill development programme aimed at training young professionals for the maritime sector.

The programme will run for six months and train 100 candidates in four disciplines of marine technology: welding, electrical, structural fittings, and pipe fittings. The training will include three months of shop-floor learning followed by three months of on-the-job training at GRSE facilities.

“This partnership with GRSE marks an important step in our mission to bridge the skills gap in the maritime industry. By combining CEMS’ training expertise with GRSE’s strong industrial base, we aim to provide young professionals with practical, industry-relevant skills that will open doors to sustainable careers and strengthen India’s shipbuilding capabilities,” said Cdr Gopi Krishna Sivvam IN (Retd.), Chief Operating Officer, CEMS.

The extension centre was inaugurated by Cmde PR Hari IN (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director of GRSE, in the presence of Saikat Roychowdhury, Head – Operations, Indian Register of Shipping, and Cdr Gopi Krishna Sivvam IN (Retd.).

CEMS was established through a collaboration between the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and the Indian Register of Shipping to provide advanced training and build a skilled workforce for the maritime sector. GRSE, under the Ministry of Defence, is engaged in warship building and engineering services.
