Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd has commenced operations at its newly established coke oven plant in Jamuria, West Bengal. The facility features two batteries with 35 ovens each and will use coal imported from Australia, Indonesia, and Russia to produce coke for the company’s blast furnace, sinter plant, and ferroalloys operations. This step is part of a backward integration strategy aimed at improving production efficiency and reducing costs.
The plant employs non-recovery coke oven technology, designed to ensure zero emissions in line with environmental regulations. Additionally, a waste heat recovery boiler (WHRB) has been installed to capture flue gases for electricity generation, further enhancing operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
According to Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Shyam Metalics, the plant’s launch supports the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable practices into its operations.
Later this year, the company plans to expand its capacity with the addition of a new blast furnace.
