Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd’s (HPCL) research division, HP Green R&D Centre (HPGRDC), has partnered with Engineers India Ltd (EIL) to commercialize HPGRDC’s hydrogen pressure swing adsorption (HP-PSA) technology in India. In this collaboration, HPCL will serve as the technology licensor, while EIL will manage engineering and commercialization within the country.

The HP-PSA technology, designed to separate hydrogen from gas streams, has been operational in a commercial-scale six-bed PSA unit at HPCL’s Visakh Refinery in Andhra Pradesh for over nine years. The long-standing operation highlights the technology’s reliability, establishing HPCL as the first licensor of hydrogen PSA technology in India and the third globally, according to the press release issued by the company.

This partnership with EIL seeks to meet the increasing demand for hydrogen within the energy sector. EIL, with its experience in large-scale oil and gas projects, will facilitate the broader adoption of HP-PSA technology in India. HPCL Executive Director of R&D, Vipul Kumar Maheshwari, commented on EIL’s role, emphasizing that the collaboration aligns with India’s goals for advancing domestic technology capabilities.

HPGRDC, based in Bengaluru, is HPCL’s main research hub, featuring 20 laboratories that support areas such as petrochemical processes, engine development, and battery technology. Over the years, the center has achieved significant progress, with 61 technologies and products developed, 614 patents filed (233 granted), and advancements that contribute to refining processes and product efficiency.

HPCL and EIL aim to leverage this partnership to strengthen India’s hydrogen infrastructure and contribute to the nation’s goals for technological and energy self-sufficiency.
