Rolls-Royce Marine North America Inc. and Triveni Engineering & Industries Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the design, development, and manufacturing of 4MW marine gas turbine generators (GTGs) for potential customers in India. The agreement also includes provisions for sales and support activities.

According to the announcement, Rolls-Royce, which supplies power and propulsion solutions for naval platforms, aims to expand its presence in India’s maritime sector. The MoU with Triveni is intended to facilitate the localization of marine gas turbine generator production and support infrastructure in India.

John Shade, Executive Vice President for U.S. Business Development and Future Programs at Rolls-Royce Defence, stated that Rolls-Royce has experience in supplying gas turbine generators for naval vessels, including the U.S. Navy’s DDG-51-class destroyers. The collaboration is expected to provide power solutions for the Indian Navy’s future fleet.

Triveni Engineering, which specializes in high-speed gears and engineered solutions, will contribute to the partnership with its manufacturing expertise. Tarun Sawhney, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Triveni Engineering, emphasized that the agreement aligns with efforts to enhance indigenous capabilities in naval defense manufacturing.

Rolls-Royce has delivered over 350 marine gas turbine generators worldwide, including those in service with the U.S. Navy, British Royal Navy, Republic of Korea Navy, and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. In India, Rolls-Royce supplies mtu engines for naval vessels and has an established aerospace and defense presence.

Triveni Engineering, a manufacturer of high-speed gears and propulsion solutions, has been involved in supplying equipment to the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. The company is investing in infrastructure for defense manufacturing, including a new multi-modal facility for naval marine equipment.

The partnership is part of broader efforts to develop and support indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities in India.
