Sojitz Corporation has invested in IOC GPS Renewables Pvt. Ltd. (IGRPL), a special purpose company formed by GPS Renewables Private Limited and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. The investment marks Sojitz’s entry into the biomethane production and sales business in India. IGRPL plans to develop 30 biomethane plants by FY2026–FY2027 with a targeted annual production capacity of 160,000 tons of biomethane. The total investment in these projects exceeds USD 400 million.

IGRPL will use feedstock such as agricultural waste to produce biomethane through anaerobic digestion, a process in which bacteria break down organic matter in an oxygen-free environment. The resulting biogas is then purified into biomethane, which can be used as a fossil fuel alternative.

GPS Renewables will provide technology and operational support based on its experience in designing, constructing, and maintaining biomethane facilities. Indian Oil Corporation will contribute its distribution and consumer network to support gas sales. Sojitz plans to leverage GPSR’s technology to explore opportunities in other regions and assess potential expansion into additional bioenergy sectors.

According to Sojitz, this initiative aligns with its Medium-term Management Plan 2026, which emphasizes investment in green transformation businesses and identifies India as a strategic focus country.

Sojitz Corporation is a Japan-based trading company involved in a wide range of businesses, including infrastructure, energy, chemicals, and consumer goods. The company has recently increased its focus on renewable energy and sustainability-oriented ventures.
