Hindustan Zinc has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Epiroc to introduce digital safety technologies in its mining operations. The strategic partnership will begin with the deployment of Epiroc’s Collision Avoidance System at the Sindesar Khurd Mine in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district and will later be expanded across all of the company’s underground mines.
In the first phase, the system will be installed on 30 Low Profile Dump Trucks (LPDTs), which are used for underground ore handling. The technology integrates proximity sensors, operator display units and wearable personal tags, connected through a centralised platform. It continuously monitors the surroundings of vehicles, identifies equipment and personnel nearby, and provides operators with visual and audible alerts. The system is designed to support safety audits, regulatory compliance and operational decision-making.
The initiative will be executed in two phases. Phase one includes installation, calibration, operator training and ongoing maintenance at Sindesar Khurd Mine. Phase two will expand the deployment across Hindustan Zinc’s underground fleet in Rajasthan to create unified safety protocols.
“Strategic metals like zinc, lead and silver are fundamental to the clean energy transition and modern technologies. As the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, Hindustan Zinc embraces digital innovations that elevate safety while enhancing productivity. The integration of Epiroc’s Collision Avoidance System at mines will consolidate our commitment to operational excellence and technological leadership. This initiative will underpin further expansion of intelligent safety solutions across our operations, ensuring safe, smart and sustainable mining,” said Arun Misra, CEO and Whole-time Director of Hindustan Zinc Limited.
“Our collaboration with Hindustan Zinc represents a landmark advancement in mining safety technology. The Collision Avoidance System exemplifies how digital innovation delivers proactive risk reduction through intelligent sensing, real-time alerts and autonomous vehicle control. We are proud to partner with Hindustan Zinc in deploying this adaptable, scalable solution that safeguards personnel while enhancing operational resilience. Together, we are establishing a global benchmark for safer, more efficient underground mining operations,” said Helena Hedblom, President and CEO of Epiroc AB.
