Larsen & Toubro Limited has secured a contract from the Indian Army for the licensed manufacturing of the BvS10 Sindhu, an articulated all-terrain vehicle designed for deployment across high-altitude, desert, marshland and amphibious environments. The vehicles will be produced at the company’s Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira with design and technical support from BAE Systems Hägglunds. The contract includes an integrated logistics support package covering initial deployment, maintenance and life-cycle sustainment.
The programme is expected to enhance operational, strategic and tactical mobility across varied deployment scenarios while building domestic capability in specialised vehicle manufacturing. “This contract marks a significant milestone in India’s defence landscape under the Make in India initiative and reaffirms L&T’s strengths in systems engineering and manufacturing of defence-critical requirements at industrial scale,” said Arun Ramchandani, Senior Vice President and Head of L&T’s Precision Engineering and Systems.
The BvS10 Sindhu is an upgraded variant of the BvS10 platform with adaptations tailored to India’s terrain and climate. The vehicle completed a series of trials in sea-level and high-altitude conditions. “The BvS10’s unmatched mobility, flexibility and performance in extreme climatic conditions are critical attributes highlighted by the Indian Army,” said Tommy Gustafsson Rask, Managing Director of BAE Systems Hägglunds.
The articulated platform enables manoeuvrability across snow, ice, rock, sand, mud, swamps and steep gradients, and its amphibious features allow operation in flooded areas and coastal waters. The modular design supports configuration for personnel transport, command and control, logistics, ambulance services, repair and recovery, and mounted lethality. The vehicle is currently in service in Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, and is also on order for the German Army.
“The BvS10 contract and licensing agreement in India reflects the exceptional teamwork of BAE Systems Hägglunds and L&T,” said Darren Restarick, Regional Director at BAE Systems Hägglunds.
