ABB India Limited has completed a modernisation programme for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Vadinar–Bina crude oil pipeline, upgrading supervisory control, automation, monitoring and cyber security systems across the 935 kilometre cross-country asset connecting Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The project was executed without any shutdowns, allowing uninterrupted pipeline operations and continued crude supply to the Bina refinery.

The Vadinar–Bina Pipeline supplies 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum of crude oil to the Bina refinery and forms part of India’s long-distance energy transportation network. The modernisation was carried out while the pipeline remained fully operational, with no disruption to throughput or refinery feedstock availability.

The scope of work included a complete upgrade of the supervisory control and data acquisition system, replacement of 35 remote terminal units across pumping, pigging and sectionalising valve stations, and installation of new SCADA servers at both the Vadinar and Bina control centres. The project also involved deployment of cyber security measures, including network protection, system hardening and centralised monitoring, aimed at improving digital resilience across the pipeline.

“We are proud to have partnered with ABB on the modernisation of the Vadinar-Bina pipeline, completed seamlessly without any shutdowns,” said Rajshekhar S, Head (Pipelines), Vadinar Bina Pipeline at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. “The project strengthened our cyber security and system resilience, greatly enhancing the reliability of the entire pipeline infrastructure.”

He said the introduction of failover capability and disaster recovery servers at both ends of the pipeline provides operational support to maintain continuity during adverse conditions, reinforcing reliability across the system.

“The Vadinar–Bina Pipeline is an important asset for the nation’s energy supply when energy demand is only increasing,” said G Balaji, Senior Vice President at ABB India’s Energy Industries division. “ABB executed the modernisation of the pipeline without any operational disruption, ensuring continuous flow and uninterrupted refinery operations throughout the project.”

ABB said it has collaborated with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited on multiple infrastructure projects, providing automation solutions across approximately 66 percent of BPCL’s pipeline network, with a focus on operational reliability, safety and cyber resilience.
