Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and BHP have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore decarbonisation strategies for steel production in India. The collaboration will focus on developing lower-carbon technologies for blast furnaces, which are central to SAIL’s integrated steel plants.
The initiative will examine the potential use of alternate reductants such as hydrogen and biochar in blast furnace operations, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As part of the agreement, both companies will explore various workstreams and conduct an initial study to assess the feasibility of these strategies.
The partnership aims to advance technology and research efforts to support decarbonisation in the steel industry over the medium and long term. SAIL’s Chairman, Amarendu Prakash, stated that the collaboration is a step towards developing sustainable steel production practices. Rag Udd, BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the importance of collective efforts in addressing the challenges of reducing carbon emissions in the steelmaking process.
The MoU signifies a commitment to addressing the climate impacts of steel production, with both parties seeking to leverage shared expertise and resources to achieve progress in this area.
