ZF Wind Power has commissioned a 13.2 MW gearbox and powertrain test rig at its facility in Coimbatore. According to the company, this infrastructure enables real-time simulation of field conditions and torque reversal cycles, with dynamic testing capabilities supporting extreme validation up to 20 MNm.
The new test rig is designed to validate gearboxes and powertrains under high-torque and speed conditions, enhancing product development processes for modern wind turbines. The test capabilities are intended to meet requirements from customers, insurers, and certification agencies. ZF stated that the facility will support new product development, reduce lead times, and optimize investment in validation processes.
The Coimbatore plant has supplied approximately 60 GW worth of wind gearbox capacity to domestic and international markets. The company indicated that this latest investment will allow the site to undertake the development of next-generation gearboxes with higher torque levels. In addition to manufacturing, the plant serves as a key service hub and houses research and development functions. It is spread over more than 120,000 square meters.
“The 13.2 MW test rig is an integral part of ZF Wind Power’s commitment to the Indian wind energy ambitions. Together with our partners, we cooperate on every challenge in the development and full life cycle of new products; from CoDesign to CoService. ZF Group is investing in India to offer complete solutions — from R&D to testing and validation — for global and local needs. In the next phase, we will establish a cold chamber test facility,” said Felix Henseler, CEO of ZF Wind Power.
During the Global Investors Meet in Chennai in 2024, the company had announced an investment of INR 7.5 billion as part of its expansion plan.
“ZF’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its continued investments in the region. The 13.2MW test rig strengthens our broader strategy to drive sustainable energy solutions and empowers the development of more efficient and reliable wind turbines,” said Akash Passey, President ZF Group India.
ZF Wind Power is a business unit of the ZF Group that develops and manufactures gearboxes and powertrains for wind turbines. Its Coimbatore facility serves both Indian and global markets and supports design, manufacturing, and testing operations for wind energy components.
