Construction technology company Hilti’s production plant and multipurpose building in Vadodara, India, have received the Gold Rating from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). This is the first time a building in India has achieved this rating. The DGNB certification is a recognized standard for sustainability in the construction industry and evaluates buildings on environmental, economic, and sociocultural aspects across their entire lifecycle.

The Vadodara facility includes a flexible production plant, a soundproof testing lab, and a pilot plant. The campus is equipped with energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems that feature chilled beams and radiant floor cooling. Rainwater harvesting and treatment systems enable 100 percent water recycling. The site also includes a photovoltaic system with an annual capacity of 1,500 MWh, charging stations for electric vehicles, bicycle parking, and a Miyawaki forest covering 25 percent of the plant’s total area to support biodiversity.

“Production facilities have specific requirements due to their varied, individual production processes, making sustainability efforts more complex compared to office buildings. We have applied with the DGNB because they offer the most holistic sustainability certification. Besides environmental and sociocultural aspects, DGNB also focuses on the economic quality of the building along the whole building life cycle,” said Peter Rupp, head of Corporate Sustainability at Hilti.

“With the successful completion of DGNB certification in India and Hungary, Hilti has demonstrated that they set high standards for holistic sustainable construction in building its own facilities worldwide. Hilti is playing a truly pioneering role here, as the project in India is the first ever to be awarded DGNB certification in that country,” said Johannes Kreißig, managing director of the DGNB.

Hilti is a construction technology company that develops, manufactures, and supplies products, software, and services for the construction industry. The company operates manufacturing plants and research centers globally and focuses on integrating sustainability into its new facilities.
