ZF Group plans to expand the local production of transmissions and axles at its newly inaugurated construction equipment plant in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The initiative is intended to meet domestic customer requirements under the company’s “local for local” approach.
“We’re proud to deepen our commitment to India’s dynamic construction sector by expanding local production of transmissions and axles in the recently inaugurated plant at Coimbatore,” said Akash Passey, President ZF Group India. “This strategic investment aligns with the Group’s ambition for the region and is aligned with the Government of India’s ambitious infrastructure push. Our advanced product portfolio is designed for unwavering reliability and is in step with the market trends toward cleaner, smarter, and digitally enabled machines.”
The facility, inaugurated in June 2025, covers 10,000 square metres and is positioned as part of the company’s broader manufacturing strategy for India. The plant is described as an off-highway manufacturing unit intended to support construction equipment and railway applications for domestic and international markets. ZF Group stated that it has invested EUR 20 million in the plant, equivalent to INR 1.92 billion in early 2025, to support the localisation of technologies and products for the construction equipment sector.
The company highlighted its ERGOPOWER powershift transmissions developed for wheel loaders, stating that standard four-speed units and optional packages such as five-speed and DirectDrive variants are designed to improve fuel efficiency and productivity. ZF also noted that ERGOPOWER transmissions are engineered to provide smooth shifting and reduce tractive effort disruption.
For heavy-duty loader applications, the company’s MULTITRAC rigid axles are built with a compact structure, reduced weight, and wet multi-disc brakes. These axles are intended to minimise braking losses, provide high ground clearance, and operate in demanding conditions. ZF stated that the combined ERGOPOWER and MULTITRAC systems are also applicable to backhoe loaders requiring consistent torque delivery and durability.
ZF further detailed its ECOMIX I hydrostatic drum drives for concrete mixer trucks. These gears are described as compact and designed to provide high power density, ease of installation, and long service life. The company also referenced its braking portfolio, including a brake-by-wire system that controls deceleration through electronic signals in place of hydraulic lines.
ZF Group is a global supplier of mobility systems and components for automotive, industrial, and off-highway applications.
