Sumitomo Drive Technologies has opened a newly relocated and expanded Cyclo Centre in Pune, strengthening local capabilities in India while supporting closer coordination with Europe and the Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) region. The expansion is aimed at addressing rising demand for local assembly, service, and shorter lead times in the Indian market.

The Pune site supports local assembly, configuration, testing, and servicing of Cyclo and power transmission solutions, including gear units and related drive technologies used across a range of industrial sectors. The company said the expanded centre will also support the installed base in India that has been developed over several decades.

The new facility was completed in eight months and increases space for assembly, engineering, service, and lifecycle support activities. The company said the layout has been designed to accommodate future growth, while enabling faster response times and closer technical support for customers across India.

“This moment is not only about a new building or a larger footprint. It is about a journey, about trust in the future, and above all about the people who made this journey possible,” said Florian Butzmann, Head of Drive Technologies EMEIA at Sumitomo Drive Technologies and Chief Executive Officer of SCG Group, speaking at the opening ceremony.

Reflecting on the company’s organisational development in India, he said, “The internal handover to the EMEIA region in 2016 was an important and necessary step. It allowed us to strengthen governance and compliance while creating the foundation for sustainable growth.”

As customer expectations for local service and reduced lead times have increased, the company said localisation has taken on greater importance. “Strengthening local assembly, engineering, service, and supply capabilities is not only a response to logistical and regulatory challenges. It is a clear commitment to our customers and partners in India,” Butzmann said.

“In only eight months, the team delivered a brand-new facility that gives our teams more space and better workflows, and creates the right environment to collaborate, learn, and deliver for our customers every day,” said Joris Blommaerts, Deputy Managing Director of SHI Europe. He added that the expansion would allow the group to grow local capabilities in India while enabling European operations to expand their engagement with the Indian market.

“This facility further increases the growing presence of Sumitomo Heavy Industries in the Indian continent, in line with other recent expansions here within our other operating segments,” said Masazumi Suzuki, Deputy Managing Director of SHI Europe.

Sumitomo Drive Technologies is part of the Sumitomo Heavy Industries group and supplies power transmission and drive solutions for industrial applications, with operations spanning Europe, India, and other international markets.
