SMS Group India, a manufacturer of plants and machinery for the metals industry, is establishing a new production workshop in Sanand, Gujarat, focused on producing rolling mills for flat and long steel products, as well as forging plants for heavy industrial applications. The facility will also offer customized repair, refurbishment, and servicing solutions for clients across Western India. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin by the end of 2025.

The Sanand unit will initially employ around 500 people, with plans to scale up to over 1,000 in direct employment and more than 1,000 in indirect employment. SMS group India aims to collaborate with vocational training initiatives and academic institutions to develop the skilled workforce required for the facility.

The workshop will support both domestic and international markets, manufacturing key equipment for export and contributing to India’s presence in the global metallurgical supply chain. The facility is expected to benefit from the region’s expanding industrial ecosystem, supported by ongoing and anticipated investments from companies such as AM/NS India, JSW, Posco, and Adani.

The initial investment for the Sanand initiative is EUR 25 million, with a strategic plan to increase it to EUR 40 million in line with production capacity growth. The project has received support from both the Gujarat state government and the national government.

SMS Group India also operates a production facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, which began operations in November 2014. Spread across more than 120,000 square meters, including 27,000 square meters of dedicated production area, the Bhubaneswar facility was built with an initial investment exceeding EUR 50 million. It currently has a plant capacity of 688,000 hours per year, with an aim to increase this to one million hours. The facility serves key clients such as Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, SAIL, and Hindalco and is strategically located near major transportation routes.

The Bhubaneswar unit manufactures and services a range of metallurgical equipment and components, including water-cooled parts, combustion chambers, rotating joints, and refurbishment services. It has contributed to international projects such as the H2 Green Steel project and has supplied equipment to clients like Nucor in the United States. The plant has also implemented quality initiatives such as the ‘Quality Circle’ concept, earning recognition at national and international forums.

SMS Group India is a subsidiary of Germany-based SMS group, which specializes in the engineering, manufacturing, and servicing of metallurgical plants and machinery for the steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metal industries.
